Dec-Jan
Feb-March 2012 Issue
The Country Register of Oregon is published every two months. The time seems to fly by between issues.
For those who prefer to read on-line we are now publishing the complete paper here for you on our web site and will leave back issues on as well. How often we have been called and someone has given their paper away or misplaced it and needed the name or location of a shop, a tea room or wanted to know where there was a paper close to them.
The print edition will still be available as usual in each advertising shop and other select rack locations. Some people will always and forever prefer to sit down in a cozy chair with a cup of tea and read through the paper edition page by page. The younger generations are more apt to go on-line and so we hope to just broaden our readership and bring more customers to the shops because of this extra exposure.
Cover art: “Daffodils” By Rebecca Barker
Rebecca grew up on her family’s dairy farm in Oxford, Ohio where she learned to appreciation quilts and country life, which inspires the subjects she paints today. She began painting in her early teens and attended Ohio University where she received her BFA degree. She also attended Miami University’s Graduate Painting School in her hometown.
In 1994, Rebecca started to create a line of paintings she calls “Quiltscapes” where the old time quilt pattern is depicted in the painting with the quilt. For example, the Grandmother’s flower Garden quilt has a painting of a flower garden in the background. Several paintings have the quilt images subtly mixed in to the landscapes while others have the quilts hanging on a clothesline in the foreground.
Rebecca paints her quiltscapes in acrylic on masonite board. She gets the quilt patterns from quilt history books and quilt shows. “I do not make up the patterns. I love the designs of the old time quilts.” Her style is described as realistic, with clear, clean colors and sensitivity to composition and texture. “My work is meant to honor the beauty and history of old quilts and their makers.” She shows her work at national quilt shows and on her web site. The quiltscape images are available in a line of note cards, limited edition prints, puzzles and many other gift items. There are two books; Quiltscapes and a second book Quiltscapes II. These books have the patterns for the quilts in the paintings.
